520 |a The Lucan mention of Mary Magdalene as being possessed by “seven demons” in Lk 8:2 has often puzzled commentators. The connection with Lk 11:14-26, which includes the only other mention of “seven demons”, creates a significant parallel. Having been delivered twice, Mary knows that defeat and alienation are not the last words of human suffering, and that God has the power to restore life and that this has happened in Jesus. Thus, ideally Mary finds herself being a key witness to the resurrection – God’s eschatological victory over Satan – having experienced God’s power within her own body. This reading is consistent with Luke’s overall theological project of describing Jesus’ victory over Satan.
