| 520 | |a The 74 sermones ad status compiled in the second quarter of the thirteenth century by the popular French preacher Jacques of Vitry (ca 1165-1240) are directed to different social groups within medieval christian society, both clerus and laity. In each of them, Vitry dwells on the duties associated with everyone’s state in life. His sermons are to be seen as ‘model sermons’, i.e. as tools for a preacher to consult when constructing his own sermons. Vitry prefers two kinds of sources : auctoritates, with a special attention for the Bible, and exempla, real life anecdotes told in a transparant, easy narrative style and often based on personal experience - or so the preacher wants us to believe. These exempla function as a kind of doctrina exemplaris, teaching through examples. In 2013, Jean Longère edited the first part of Vitry’s sermones ad status (prologue and sermons 1-36, CCCM, 255). Taking Longère’s work as a starting point, this paper presents the edition of the last two sermons of the collection (73-74). They are addressed to the male youngsters and offer interesting insights in educational concepts and practices of the early thirteenth century. Special attention is given to the influence of Vitry’ sermons on the franciscan preacher Guibert of Tournai (†1284). | ||
