520 |a The foundation of religious edifices and the establishment of charitable institutions in Constantinople by members of the imperial family during the Komnenian period are subjects that have received extensive scholarly attention. The current paper extends the discussion to the period 1180 -1204, investigating the patronage undertaken by the emperors of this time and in particular by Andronikos I Komnenos (1183-85) and Isaac II Angelos (1185-95). In addition to highlighting the ambitious and extensive patronage of religious edifices and charitable institutions by these emperors, the paper explores the character of the imperial foundations in question and considers the motives of their patrons.
