Description
Résumé:During the years leading up to the rising of 1809 the devotion to the Sacred Heart became a key issue in the religious, cultural, and political resistance to the occupying forces in Tyrol. The Sacred Heart became not only a religious symbol against the forces of the enlightenment, but also a political symbol against the values of the French Revolution. The study looks at some of the sermons about the Sacred Heart given in Tyrol before 1809, at the role of the devotion in Andreas Hofer's uprising, and its political appropriation in the oath to the Sacred Heart of the Tyrolean government. Finally it asks the question of the conditions under which such an oath finds appropriate fulfillment.
