Mercier subit l'opposition du recteur de l'Université Jean-Baptiste Abbeloos et du premier professeur de cosmologie Henry de Dorlodot. La Faculté des sciences, en principe fortement impliquée par ces développements, resta largement absente de ces controverses. Cette contribution vise à reconstruire la position de la Faculté et à expliquer son apparent manque d'intérêt dans les questions touchant à la science et la religion. En général, pour la Faculté, la position de l'Université dans le monde scientifique était plus importante que son rôle dans le monde catholique. | ||
| 520 | |a The neo-Thomist movement at the Catholic University of Leuven came to fruition with the erection of a Higher Institute of Philosophy. Its creator was Désiré Mercier, the future Archbishop of Mechelen. However, the Institute's early days were tinged with controversy, particularly with respect to the relationship between science and religion. Mercier encountered opposition from the Rector of the Jean-Baptiste Abbeloos University and from the first professor of cosmology, Henry de Dorlodot. The Faculty of Science, usually directly involved in such proceedings, remained largely absent from these contentious discussions. This contribution aims to reconstruct the Faculty's position and to explain its apparent lack of interest in issues concerning science and religion. Generally speaking, from the Faculty's point of view, the position of the University in the scientific world was more important than its role in the Catholic world. | ||
