| Σύνοψη: | Este artigo analisa as relações entre gênero, religião e trabalho missionário de mulheres solteiras entre o final do século XIX e inícios do XX. Destacando a figura da missionária metodista norte-americana Martha Hite Watts, que viveu no Brasil entre 1881 e 1908, explora as relações entre evangelicalismo, emancipação feminina, identidades, alteridades e papéis sociais de gênero, alteridades como representações históricas e culturais de movimentos de mulheres em suas tensas relações com a religião em suas vertentes conservadoras e fundamentalistas. This article analyzes the relations between gender, religion, and missionary work of single women from the end of the 19th cen-tury and beginning of the 20th. Highlightingt he character of the North-American Methodist missionary Martha Hite Watts, who lived in Brazil between 1881 and 1908, it explores the relations between evangelicalism, women emancipation, identities, alterities, and social roles of gender, alterities as historical and cultural representations of women’s movements in their tense relations with religion in its conservative and fundamentalist aspects. |
