| Resumo: | In the present volume, which grows from his dissertation work, Maciej Zięba provides a map of papal understandings of the proper role of economics within society, with a focus on John Paul II's (r. 1978–2005) contribution to political economy. Indeed, the discursive attention on the late pope's views is so prominent that the title of the monograph is rather misleading. As a result, while the important social encyclicals Rerum Novarum (1891) and Caritas in Veritate (2009) are briefly analyzed, the book concentrates much more on Laborem Exercens (1981), Sollicitudo Rei Socialis (1987), and particularly, Centisimus Annus (1991). Further, this orientation means that use of the phrase the Catholic Church in the monograph's title represents a collapse of models of ecclesiology, away from vertical or even episcopal framings, toward the papal office to a point that the phrase sometimes serves as a stand-in for John Paul II's teachings ... |
