520 | |a This article examines two ways that ancient Israelites mentally organized the world’s animal inventory and physical geography in conjunction with each other. In the first way, the world was mentally partitioned into three zoological/physical realms: the water and its animals, the land and its animals, and the air and its animals. An Israelite who viewed the world in this way saw it as an articulated totality—a single, broad, physical expanse having three sections. In the second way, the world was mentally partitioned into two realms: the water and its animals, and the land/air complex, or terrestrial realm, and its animals. An Israelite who viewed the world in this way saw it as having two distinct/separate regions: one region where humans lived (the terrestrial realm), and another region where humans did not live (the aquatic realm). | ||
