Summary: | Today, different interpretations of Islam are in conflict with each other. There are extremists who swear allegiance to the Islamic State and commit terrorist acts; liberal Muslims, who want to adapt Islam to the 21st century; and conservative Muslims, who reject Western and liberal values. Chechens, who have recently experienced two terrible wars, resist attempts from outside to impose an extremist and violent interpretation of Islam on them and intend to remain faithful to their traditional Sufism. The more authoritarian Kadyrov government, on the other hand, has embarked on a path of Islamization of the country. His vision of Islam and Islamic society is also incompatible with liberal values. |
