Au Canada, la valeur sociale, spirituelle et communautaire des congrégations de culte locales est acceptée depuis longtemps. Malgré cette reconnaissance qualitative généralisée, peu d’études ont pris en compte l’impact économique que ces congrégations fournissent directement à leurs communautés environnantes. En s’inspirant sur des recherches récentes aux États-Unis, cet article propose la première estimation nationale quantitative de la valeur socio-économique de ces congrégations religieuses pour la société canadienne. Cette étude donne un aperçu du bénéfice socio-économique, ou “effet de halo”, que les congrégations et les lieux de culte canadiens ont sur leurs communautés environnantes. L'article propose deux estimations, dont la portée économique varie de l’impact de base des dépenses des congrégations à un chiffre plus généreux résultant de l’application de modèles de retour social sur investissement. | ||
| 520 | |a Since the earliest days of religious worship, houses of worship have stood as symbols of meaning and value. In Canada, the social, spiritual and communal value of local worshipping congregations has long been accepted. Despite this widespread qualitative acknowledgement, few studies have considered the economic impact that these congregations provide directly to their surrounding communities. Drawing on recent research in the United States, this article offers the first quantitative national estimate of the socio-economic value of these religious congregations to Canadian society. This study offers insight into the socio-economic benefit, or “Halo Effect”, that Canadian congregations and places of worship have on their surrounding communities. The article offers two estimates, ranging in economic scope from the basic impact of congregational spending, to a more generous figure resulting from the application of Social Return on Investment (SROI) models. | ||
