Two recent historical-biographical novels, written by Antonio Scurati – M. Il figlio del secolo (of 2018) and M. L’uomo della provvidenza (of 2020) – have become true literary phenomena, selling several hundred thousand copies in Italy. In this article we discuss the so-called «policy of the outstretched hand», instrumentally implemented by Mussolini towards the Catholic hierarchy. He soon realized that in order to govern the Italians he needed the support of the Church, and most certainly not to enter into open conflict with it. This did in fact happen, but not always under the conditions imposed or desired by the Duce of Fascism. | ||
