By comparing the number of future Israel to stars, dust, and sand God illustrates that they are uncountable. To later recipients of God’s promise, this suggested that by consequence it is not even allowed to count the people. The Book of Tobias serves as an example of the authoritative character of the patriarchs’ behaviour: their practicing endogamy is not only to be imitated, but comes close to a commandment. God’s words to the patriarchs are even more authoritative.Hence, God describing the people’s uncountability was taken as meaning that it is forbidden to count the Israelites. This helps to understand why David’s census should be a sin. | ||

Gott illustriert die Verheißungen reicher Nachkommenschaft an die Erzväter mit den Vergleichsgrößen der Sterne, Staub- oder Sandkörner. Diese Unzählbarkeit wird als Zählverbot aufgefasst, zumal Gott selbst Urheber der Verheißung ist. Wie das Tobitbuch im Blick auf die Praxis der Endogamie zeigt, besitzen die offensichtlich bekannten Vätererzählungen der Genesis einen autoritativen, geradezu gesetzlichen Status. Gottes Aussage der Unzählbarkeit führt dazu, ein Verbot des Zählens Israels anzunehmen, in dessen Horizont die Volkszählung Davids als Verfehlung verständlich wird. | ||
