Or, l’étude de son rôle dans la gestion des finances de son ménage mettra en évidence le lien existant entre cette nouvelle économie de la foi et la tenue de son économie domestique. Nous montrerons que les pratiques économiques de Luther semblent moins reposer sur une éthique fusionnant mode de vie ascétique et lucratif que sur une théologie de la gratuité. La place centrale accordée à l’économie du don gratuit, sans contredon, nous incitera à revisiter les thèses wébériennes sur l’éthique protestante et l’esprit du capitalisme. | ||
| 520 | |a Martin Luther, the Economy of Faith and Household Economy: Luther’s doctrine of justification by faith alone resulted in a radically new understanding of the economy of salvation. Sinners could no longer redeem their sins, but were granted salvation as a free gift from God, who graciously cancelled the insolvent debt they owed him. By scrutinizing how Luther managed his personal finances, this paper aims to highlight the connection existing between this new economy of faith and his own household economy. I will argue that Luther’s economic practices relied more on a theology of gratuity than on an ethic of both ascetic and lucrative way of life. The central role of an economy of free giving (without counter-giving) will allow us to take another look at Weber’s theses on Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism. | ||
