Je me penche sur le développement d’arguments d’ordre éthique, utilisés pour condamner les pratiques "superstitieuses" que Viret accuse de saper les bases de la charité chrétienne en permettant au fidèle de s’acheter le salut. En lieu et place de donner pour le "culte des morts",Viret exhorte le chrétien à aider son frère pauvre dans le besoin, selon le message délivré par le Christ. Son discours laisse transparaître une sensibilité propre et des influences diverses (humaniste et zwinglienne notamment) qui permettent de réviser l’image de Viret comme simple épigone de Jean Calvin. | ||
| 520 | |a Pierre Viret and true charity: The difficult renewal of private charity after the suppression of the cult of the dead in Lausanne: One of the most important developments of the Reformation was the suppression of Catholic practices aimed at ensuring the salvation of the believer. In this article, I aim to examine the position of the Swiss Reformer Pierre Viret on this debate, from the 1530s onwards. I will especially look into his use of ethical arguments that lead him to condemn the "superstitious" practices undermining, in his view, the foundations of Christian charity by encouraging Christians to buy their salvation. Instead of giving to the "cult of the dead", Viret exhorted the faithful to help poor brothers in need, according to the message delivered by Christ. His works denoted a specific sensitivity and a use of various influences (Humanism, Zwinglianism) that allow us to take another look at Viret´s reputation as a mere epigone of Calvin. | ||
