Description
Summary:This article tries to fill in the gap concerning the notion of Protestant missions in China. For the sake of complexity, the history of Catholic missions is mentioned as a background to what has followed. The author briefly touches upon the Russian Orthodox mission, too. She further considers the question of conversion, as well as the difficulties foreign missions had encountered in China. Then, the development of Protestant missions is pictured, broken into three periods: the beginnings (1807-39), the new possibilities after the Opium wars, and the years of growth during 1860-1897. As for the 20th century, the author describes the negative impact of constant warfare on missionary activities in the twenties, and proceeds with the positive changes caused by Chinese nationalism in the following two decades. A note on the situation under the Communist rule concludes the article.
