Description
Summary:Salvador Dalí painted 105 pictures on the Bible in 1963-65. From the gouaches there were created high-quality lithographs, which were published 1967 by Rizzoli (Milan) in 5 large Bible-volumes ("Biblia sacra") by Giuseppe Albaretto (1797 copies). In this article I will show that Albaretto often misunderstood the paintings and gave them false titles. E.g. he assigned a painting connected to Apk 18 falsely to Jer 1,5, or one which refers to Sir 9 to Mt 25. This means: Whoever tries to interpret Dalís cycle "Biblia Sacra" shouldn’t take the starting point at the titles or Bible verses (since they are often wrong as well). Instead one first has to describe the picture, then look for the appropriate Bible text and only then may continue to interpret the work. In the end, one will see that Dalí has incredible exegetical and theological knowledge. In my view it’s time that these highly underestimated paintings are discovered as some of the deepest religious artworks of the 20th century.
