While the antithetical model considers the Old Testament to be negative and obsolete, different synthetical models emphasise the continuity between both Testaments. This article looks at Cologne Cathedral to show that in its art program, for example the figures and stain glass windows, one can discover all these different models. The antithetical model can be found in the tympanon of the main entrance, the promise - fulfilment model in the second of the Bavarian windows, where the birth of Christ is shown above the four Great Prophets of the Old Testament. More dominant however are other models: The typological model, which finds Christ prefigurated in the Old Testament, shapes almost all the representations of Old Testament scenes from the first building phase of the cathedral (13th-16th centuries), beginning with the central window of the choir. In the second building phase (19th century), however, the salvation historical model, which emphasises the historical continuity of God’s action, enters the centre, for example in the wall figures of the main entrance, even though this can be found already on the shrine of the Three Holy Kings (12th/13th centuries) and in the root of Jesse window (1509 AD). Moreover, the thematical model, which draws lines with regard to the contents between both Testaments, is well represented in the second building phase, for example in the figures of the Portal of the Three Holy Kings and in the west window of the cathedral. | ||
