| Summary: | The St. Matthew Passion of Johann Sebastian Bach is shaped not only by the passion story of Matthew but also by church tradition, especially by Luther and his doctrine of atonement and justification. In accordance with the exegetical approaches of the early 18th century, the St. Matthew Passion regards the Old and the New Testament as a unit, reading the Old Testament as referring to Christ. This, however, is an appropriation of the Old Testament, as it dispossesses the Jews of their Bible. This corresponds to the anti-Jewish tendencies of Matthew, Luther and the St. Matthew Passion, which all blame the Jews for the death of Jesus. As a result, in the St. Matthew Passion central aspects of the traditional message of salvation collide with central aspects of traditional Christian anti-Judaism. It is important that the anti-Judaic passages are perceived in their historical context, but they should be left as they are to reach a new approach to the passion story and the St. Matthew Passion. Christianity should no longer adhere to a message of salvation at the expense of Jews. |
