AB Artiklen beskæftiger sig med påstanden om, at luthersk kristendom er en vigtig forudsætning for den danske velfærdsstat. Denne bygger på et noget-for-ingenting princip, der hævdes at forudsætte en kærlighedsmoral. Som udtryk for en sådan moral fremstilles K.E. Løgstrup. Efter et kort rids af lutherdommens historiske holdning til fattigdom afprøves disse synspunkter i form af en analyse af Løgstrups etiske argumentation for økonomisk ligestilling. Hans opfattelse sammenlignes med John Rawls’ princip om fordelingsretfærdig­hed. På trods af forskelle kan der hos de to uddrages den fælles tese, at støtten til velfærdsstaten og den sociale sammenhængskraft kan være begrundet i religion, men at det ikke behøver være tilfældet.
AB   The  article  discusses  the  role  of  religion  for  the  cohesive force in a modern society. The ethical foundation of the welfare state serves  as  a  concrete  case.  The  historical  relationship  between  the  Danish  welfare state model and Lutheran Christianity is discussed. Knud E. Løgstrup’s concept of neighbour love as political idea is presented and compared with John Rawls’ theories of distributive justice and overlapping consensus. The article concludes  with  the  claim  that  a  welfare  state  model  can  be  defended  on  the  grounds of a Christian neighbour love ethics. But no claim can be made that such a religious foundation is necessary.
