Although the struggle between diachronic and synchronic approaches has subsided somewhat, exegetical methodology still clings to traditional features in several ways. In contrast, the textbook by Utzschneider/Nitsche employs insights of literary studies to a high degree. After an introduction into the basis of this approach, the present paper compares it to »classical« methodology with respect to the arrangement of methods in general, as well as the application of literary criticism and form criticism in detail (exemplified by the textbook of U. Becker). Strengths and weaknesses of both textbooks are portrayed. In sum, this paper argues in favour of cultivating insights of literary studies, not at least because academic teaching will benefit in several ways: Firstly, paying respect to the canonical text form counters a growing scepticism among students towards diachronic perspectives. Secondly, as many students combine theology with literary studies, there is a high interdisciplinary potential in applying a literary exegetical approach. And finally, future pastors and teachers will receive analytical tools, which can be applied easily and very fruitful in diverse practical contexts. | ||
