| Summary: | Conclusions from neuro-scientific research suggest that even the subject of thought, the self itself, is fundamentally interconnected; in a way, in fact, that beside and behind this interconnection the actual nucleus, the subject, has disappeared. There is no subject, no self, no I, and thus — these are the theological side effects — no-one who could possibly be addressed by God and therefore believe. The concept of soul does not necessarily help along here. There are, however, viable theological arguments, after the Epistle to the Romans and Luther, to replace the orations on a substantial self by dialogically constituted ‘responsive subjectivity’. |
