AB Beginning with some historical observations about the scandalous works of mercy and continuing with remarks about the insistence on mercy in the words and deeds of Pope Francis, the article arrives at the conclusion that scandal and mercy seem tob e interlinked. Thus the author offers up a definition of mercy as the willingness to enter into the chaos of the other and thus also enter into the danger of causing scandal. Der Autor schlägt aufgrund historischer und gegenwartsbezogener Beobachtungen vor, Barmherzigkeit zu definieren als die Offenheit, in das Chaos eines anderen Menschen einzutreten und dabei die Möglichkeit zur Erregung von Anstoß bewusst in Kauf zu nehmen.
