Was meint Paulus mit dieser Bildsprache? Indem er seine Metaphem mischt, scheint er auf ein vielleicht unbewusstes kulturelles Verständnis von Zom und Barmherzigkeit als Flüssigkeiten zu zielen, die Gott wohl auszugießen vermag. Es kann also gut sein, dass Gott eventuell vorhat, seine leeren Töpfe mit Zom und Erbarmen zu füllen, und schon entschieden hat, welche jeweils zu gebrauchen seien. | ||

He expects his (imagined) interlocutor to follow his argument with agreement on theological issues of the nature of God. But 9:20–24 throws up an image of a potter who, while completely free in his creation of pots, seems to have planned separate uses for them all along: some for mercy, others for wrath. What does Paul mean with this image? In mixing metaphors Paul seems to draw on a perhaps unconscious cultural metaphor of wrath and mercy as liquids, which God may choose to pour out. It may well be therefore that God eventually plans to fill his empty pots with both wrath and mercy, and has already decided which to use for each. | ||
