Le retour au Nouveau Testament met en valeur l’ambivalence de l’adjectif « éternel » (en grec aiônios), inséparable de la notion d’éon (aiôn), désignant comme un espace-temps divin, inaccessible au sein de l’histoire, quoique déjà mystérieusement présent. Ce sera le propre des écrits johanniques que d’insister, tant sur le déjà-là d’une eschatologie anticipée que sur l’intériorité du sujet croyant, appelé à laisser sourdre en lui la « source d’eau jaillissant en vie éternelle » (Jn 4,14). The notion of “eternal life” today is burdened with a static and a-historical interpretation. A return to the New Testament highlights the ambivalence of the adjective “eternal” (in Greek aiônios), inseparable from the notion of eon (aiôn), designating a divine space-time inaccessible within history, although already mysteriously present. It is characteristic of the Johannic scriptures to insist both on an anticipated eschatology already present and on the interiority of the believing subject, called upon to let well up within her- or himself the “a fountain of water welling up into eternal life” (Jn 4,14). |
