520 | |a The possibility of immortality has unceasingly preoccupied humanity. Some affirm that this issue is one of the past, following the Heideggerian thesis of the ontological finitude of humankind. In this view, time is envisioned on the basis of death, that is, time is closed in an a priori way. Others, on the contrary, argue that temporality is open and that historical and techno-scientific “progress” enable homo faber to go beyond individual death. After a critical discussion of these positions and their premises, the article takes up the question of immortality referring to an anthropology of the gift on behalf of the creature gratuitously receiving life or hope which entails an attitude of receptivity and escapes from all control.
