Summary: | This paper examines the so far unrecognized correspondence between the classical philologist Werner Jaeger and the art historian and metaphysician Ananda Coomaraswamy, one of the main spokesmen of the sophia perennis in the Guénonian sense. I will delineate the relevance of the "intellectual constellation" Jaeger-Coomaraswamy - a "constellation" which is not of mere historical interest, but gives reason to discuss some fundamental questions concerning the deeper value of religious (and esoteric) studies in a humanist education worthy of this name. In fact, Coomaraswamy's criticism of Jaeger's perspective illustrates how the project of humanism is challenged or rather transformed through the disclosure of non-European religious and esoteric sources in the twentieth century.
