AB Face à l’essor du capitalisme et à son lot d’injustices criantes, les chrétiens, à la fin du xixe siècle, s’engagèrent massivement sur le terrain des œuvres de bienfaisance. En proposant une critique du système, l’Union de Fribourg fait exception. Ses travaux sur le régime du crédit offrent un aperçu représentatif de l’imaginaire en présence chez les catholiques sociaux, au carrefour de Rerum novarum. La présente contribution établit la portée de cette critique faite sous l’angle de l’usure et revient sur leur alternative corporatiste. En filigrane, elle interroge aussi le recours à la théologie opéré dans ce contexte.
AB Faced with the rise of capitalism and its share of glaring injustices, Christians at the end of the nineteenth century responded primarily through significant engagements in charitable works. In proposing a critique of the capitalist system, the Union of Fribourg represented an exception. Its work on the credit system offers an important insight into the imagination of social Catholics in the era of Rerum novarum. This contribution considers the implications of this critique for the question of usury and examines the corporatist alternative proposed by the Union of Fribourg. More broadly, it also considers the use of theology in this particular historical context.
