Description
Résumé:The interest of this article is the role that narratives play in the development of communities that are undergoing change. Narratives serve the role of inspiring people and creating a spirit of development. I am interested in the role that narrative plays in sustainable community development. Both narrative and community are two contested terms and I will provide conceptual clarification of the two terms. It is useful to find points of convergence and divergence. Points of contact might provide moments for change, progress, or transformation, while points of difference might assist us in imagining greater and infinite possibilities of development. One of the central issues for both narrative and development is agency - in other words, who tells the story and who is responsible for development. I explore the repositioning of the storyteller and the implications this has for power relations: How does the repositioning of the affected persons from margins to center influence agency, identity, and action? I use stories/story to point out markers for development and to illustrate narrative for community development.
