Sumario:This article demonstrates that devout songs are strongly entwined with the individual identity-building process. Furthermore, I argue that songs have the same goal as other devout texts; namely, guiding the devout towards God through a religious life and, subsequently, in the afterlife. In order to make this clear, I have compared the devout songs from manuscript Berlin SBB-PK mgo 185 with prose texts from the same female religious context. This broadens our knowledge of the function of devout songs within devout textual culture and will tell us more about the formation of the religious personality.
