| Σύνοψη: | The growth of the Israelites in the land of Egypt as reported in the opening chapter of Exodus naturally exhibits close ties to the promises of progeny made by the deity to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob across Genesis. The present analysis presents a model of composition for Exod 1 that reckons with three large compositional phases, which were then subject to various smaller supplementations: 1) the priestly connection to Genesis; 2) a »Joseph redaction« over the priestly material; 3) the post-priestly addition of the episode of the Hebrew midwives. |
