L’usage de cet outil polémique a longtemps faussé l’approche en religions comparées. Forgée dans le contexte de la relation au judaïsme (où nous le voyons à l’oeuvre de Saint Augustin à Vatican II, en passant par Saint Bernard, Pascal et Léon Bloy) la «figure » , aussi nommée «type » , se voit subvertie à partir des années 50. Elle est alors resémantisée par la critique des vols de langage colonialistes, illustrée par Roland Barthes et reprise en anthropologie par Jack Goody.
