A causa dell’esperienza pratica acquisita dai cappellani industriali, il focus del “lavoro sociale” si spostò a metà degli anni Cinquanta dal singolo lavoratore alla fabbrica come comunità. I gesuiti divennero consapevoli delle diseguaglianze che i dipendenti dovettero affrontare nel sistema capitalista. Consideravano il trattamento ingiusto dei lavoratori, da parte del sistema economico capitalista, incompatibile con l’etica cristiana. Il generale Arrupe, eletto nel 1965, sostenne la stessa opinione e incoraggiò il loro lavoro. Tuttavia la mancanza di una base teologica divenne problematica; un centro di ricerca gesuita olandese per l’assistenza sociale avrebbe potuto dargli una base più teorica. Nel 1969, di fronte a grandi abbandoni, i gesuiti olandesi conclusero che il loro apostolato industriale non poteva sopravvivere come progetto pastorale indipendente. Così iniziarono ad integrarlo nelle strutture diocesane. | ||
