Religion has proved a fertile ground for fake news, spread not only by private actors but also by governments, which try to justify their repression of the groups they do not approve of. The Chinese government has emerged as a main purveyor of fake news, aimed at justifying the persecution of groups it labels as xie jiao (“heterodox teachings”). The article discusses the notion of “fake news” in general, and examines how the Chinese authorities, with the co-operation of certain Western media, engaged in a massive campaign of fake news in their attempt to discredit one of the groups they persecute as a xie jiao, The Church of Almighty God.
