Difficilement repérable en raison de sa denomination variable, la pale n’est pas moins attestée sur les autels, dès le milieu du xve siècle, par des sources textuelles, iconographiques et matérielles. Sa rigidité et son décor s’inscrivent dans une tendance générale à l’ornementation des textiles du culte. Son élaboration signe l’obsolescence d’une partie de l’exégèse symbolique et une certaine rationalisation du rituel eucharistique qui s’épanouira à l’époque moderne. | ||
| 520 | |a From the ninth century onwards, the corporal, which was a symbol of purity and the winding-sheet of Christ, possessed great sacrality. However, during the later Middle Ages it was partially replaced by the palla for the purpose of covering the chalice during the Mass. It is difficult to identify it because of its variable names, but the palla is nevertheless indicated by textual, iconographical and material sources as being present on altars from the mid-fifteenth century. Its rigidity and its decor belong to a general tendency towards ornamenting the fabrics used in worship. Its proliferation points to the obsolescence of part of the symbolic exegesis and also to a degree of rationalisation in the eucharistic ritual that would blossom during the early modern period. | ||

Im Spätmittelalter wurde es jedoch teilweise durch die Palla ersetzt, um den Kelch während der Messe zu bedecken. Die Palla ist wegen ihrer wechselnden Bezeichnung schwer ausfindig zu machen. Gleichwohl ist sie seit der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts auf den Altären durch schriftliche, ikonografische und materielle Quellen bezeugt. Ihre Steifheit und ihr Dekor entsprechen einem allgemeinen Trend zur Ornamentik von Textilien, die für den Gottesdienst benutzt werden. Ihre Bearbeitung ist Ausdruck für das Veraltern eines Teils der symbolischen Exegese und für eine gewisse Rationalisierung des eucharistischen Rituals, die sich in der Neuzeit entfaltet. | ||
