Les dirigeants politiques et religieux de l’époque considéraient qu’il était nécessaire de maintenir la « véritable foi » pour être fidèle à Dieu et pour protéger leurs sujets. Ainsi les hérétiques ont été mis à mort pour des raisons à la fois religieuses et politiques. L’exemple du Christ, les textes bibliques concernant la souffrance pour la foi et la piété médiévale ont fourni les fondements spirituels nécessaires pour les personnes prêtes à donner leur vie. Bien que les martyrs catholiques, luthériens, réformés, anglicans et anabaptistes soient allés à la mort en citant les mêmes textes bibliques, la période des martyrs a contribué au durcissement et à la solidification des identités confessionnelles, jusqu’à très récemment. Cet élément négatif de l’histoire est l’un des éléments ayant contribué au développement des positions contemporaines concernant la relation Église-État. | ||
| 520 | |a Thousands of 16th century Christians were put to death by other Christians in the context of Reformation period polemics and violence. Political and religious leaders during that period believed that political entities needed to enforce “true faith” in order to be faithful to God and to protect the salvation of their subjects. Heretics were thus put to death for both religious and political reasons. Christ’s example as well as biblical texts dealing with suffering for one’s faith and medieval piety provided the necessary spiritual foundations for people being willing to accept their death. Although Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican and Anabaptist martyrs referred to the same biblical texts when going to their death, 16thf century martyrdom contributed to the hardening and fixing of confessional identities until very recently. This negative history was one element of the development of contemporary understandings of the relationship between Church and State | ||
