Description
Summary:The story of the cult of the "veiled" Madonna of Foggia, also known as the Iconavetere or Madonna of the Seven Veils, which began at the end of the eleventh century, has in its background the age-old conflict between the chapter of the collegiate church of Foggia and the bishops of Troy, in whose jurisdiction it was included until 1855. The articulated legend of the Iconavetere, written in the middle of the seventeenth century, is late in imposing itself both for the opposition of the Trojan clergy and for the fear of incurring the strict dictates of the Council of Trento against the local cults. The affirmation of his cult is closely linked to the apparitions of the Virgin that followed after the earthquake of 1731, in particular those to Alfonso Maria de' Liguori. They gave a seal of authenticity to the tradition of the prodigious discovery of the Icon in the waters of a quagmire and contributed decisively to provide for the ecclesiastical autonomy of Foggia.
