Firstly, the research studies the reaction of the Holy See, which probably influenced the attitude of the Italian Catholics, and the Pope's approach concerning the Middle East question. Secondly, the article focuses on the conduct of the ecclesiastic hierarchies - including the Military Ordinariate -, reconstructing the pastoral care and some religious celebrations promoted to commemorate the event. Finally, it investigates the reactions of the Catholic public opinion in Italy, mainly through the analysis of the Catholic press, which often also reports the public discourses held during public events. Predominantly, the study wants to observe whether and to what extent the Italian Catholicism tried to represent the 1917-18 Palestine campaign as a crusade in order to legitimize the conflict. With different approaches, the Italian Catholic clergy and laity appeared generally reluctant to explicitly use of the ideology of crusade due to theological and doctrinal reasons: the conquest of Jerusalem was part of the just war conducted by the Entente, but it could not be considered like a step or the conclusion of a crusade. | ||
