Although Ong wrote relatively little theology proper, there is a surprising degree of confluence between Ong's leading ideas in media/communication theory and Balthasar's ideas about how our perception of beauty is of a piece with divine revelation. I relate their respective insights in three particular areas: (1) the phenomenology of spiritual perception; (2) the role of technology vis-à-vis revelation; and (3) the theology of the Word of God as word.
