| Summary: | This exploratory study investigated university students' perceptions (N = 197) regarding the ridicule of religious and spiritual beliefs. It was hypothesized that ridicule of religious and spiritual beliefs might be affected by how religious/spiritual belief systems are perceived to deal with contemporary moral questions, how religious/spiritual beliefs have been perceived to justify violent or exclusionary behaviors, how religious/spiritual behavioral demands may appear to others, and whether respondents perceive religious/spiritual belief systems to encourage tolerance. In a regression analysis using the predicted variable of Ridicule of Religious/Spiritual Beliefs (R = 0.51, R2 = 0.26, Adjusted R2 = 0.24), four significant predictor variables were identified: (a) Perceptions of Religion's/Spirituality's links to contemporary beliefs, (b) Justifying violence and misinterpreting religious/spiritual belief, (c) Perceptions of religious/spiritual oddity, and (d) Age. The variable I have studied spirituality and/or religion' was retained because of its proximity to significance and its theoretical relevance. |
