During this time della Genga‘s aversion to the principles of Enlightenment both inside and outside of the Church was reinforced, but realized also the necessity of political compromises to safeguard the institutional basis of the Church. He maintained this flexibility also later as pope. Despite of all restorative and anti-enlightening intentions, he was even able to make compromises, so that he could conclude contracts between the States and the Church and could promote the peaceful co-existence of Catholics and Protestants in Germany. The most important field of conflict was there the question of confessional mixed marriages.
