Description
Summary:Cardinal Van Thuan exercised the virtue of hope in an extraordinary, "heroic" way, as it was put in the Decree of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (May 4th, 2017): together with this, he can be considered a master in living this virtue. In what sense can it be said that the Venerable Servant of God is also a "theologian" of hope? Even just looking at the titles of Van Thuan's works, hope appears to be the main object of his "theology", that is to say on his conceptual reflection of how he lived, on the experience he made of this gift in the years he spent in both prison and in exile. The theological loci of the Vietnamese prelate are primarily the Gospels and the Documents of the Second Vatican Council, beginning with the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes (the Joy and Hope) texts that he recalled from memory and reflected on these in the long years of imprisonment. Because of the essential nature of his sources, Van Thuan's theology presents itself with a freshness which is all his and it can represent for every Christian an effective itinerarium in spem (account of the journey in the hope of).
