| 520 | |a The 500th, 150th, and the 35th commemorations of the Reformation, the Confederation of Canada, and the publication of the Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) Document all occurred in 2017: the first, a splitting in the Christian church; the second, a unification of an immigrant nation; the third, an important ecumenical document of agreement on divisive matters. In immigrating and creating the nation known today as Canada, various Protestant denominations began to work and live together unlike they had in their homelands. Despite shared similarities in theology and linked histories, Anglicans and Lutherans in particular were not always welcoming to each other. Their disagreements result from a history of failed political attempts, and noted disagreements by their respective theologians. There is very little in the relationship prior to the 1982 publication of BEM that suggested that the living out of the 2001 Called to Full Communion document between the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada would be successful. The present success originates in their responses to BEM as areas of agreement and by their deliberate living into those responses. The result, though still a work in progress, is something a nation of immigrants could build. | ||

Le premier événement constitua une division dans l’Église chrétienne, le deuxième l’unification d’une nation d’immigrants, le troisième un document oecuménique important sur des sujets controversés. En immigrant et en créant la nation qu’on appelle aujourd’hui le Canada, diverses dénominations protestantes commencèrent à travailler et à vivre ensemble comme elles ne l’avaient pas fait dans leurs pays d’origine. Bien que partageant certains aspects de leur théologie et de leur histoire, Anglicans et Luthériens surtout ne furent pas toujours accueillants les uns pour les autres. Leurs désaccords remontent à une histoire d’échecs en politique et à des divergences d’opinions entre leurs théologiens. Les rapports entre l’Église anglicane du Canada et l’Église évangélique luthérienne au Canada antérieurs à la publication en 1982 de BEM ne présageaient guère le succès du document de 2001 Appelés à une pleine communion. Le succès actuel provient de leurs réactions à BEM en tant que domaines où l’accord est possible et de leur détermination à agir en conséquence. Il y a encore du progrès à faire, mais le résultat montre ce que peut accomplir une nation d’immigrants. | ||
