| Summary: | Practical theology as a distinct discipline within the broad field of Catholic theological research is a relatively recent phenomenon. As the theological reflection on how the Church understands and actualizes its mission in the world, practical theology must address the tension between what the Church is and what it is called to be. Pope Francis' leadership, while inspiring hope among many Catholics, has unleashed a bitter backlash that underscores the difficulty of reform.addresses sensitive areas of Church practice around marriage, family, and sexuality and has become a powerful example of the hope and fear that Francis' leadership evokes. This article speaks to the role of practical theology in understanding the tension and uncertainty that exists in the Church, as well as exploring concrete ways to make the doctrine of thean effective bridge across what appears to be an insuperable divide in the life of the People of God. La théologie pratique comme discipline distincte au sein du domaine plus étendu de la recherche théologique catholique est un phénomène relativement récent. À mesure que la réflexion théologique sur la manière dont l'Église comprend et met en oeuvre sa mission dans le monde, la théologie pratique doit tenir compte de la tension entre ce qu'est l'Église et ce qu'elle est appelée à être. Le leadership du pape François, qui suscite de l'espoir chez plusieurs catholiques, a provoqué une réaction amère qui montre bien combien est difficile la réforme.traite des aspects délicats de la pratique de l'Église au sujet du mariage, de la famille et de la sexualité et devient ainsi un exemple éloquent de l'espoir et des craintes que suscite le leadership de François.
