In 1003 Symeon was posed a question concerning the nature of the Trinity: How do you distinguish the Son from the Father? Symeon's response took the form of what is now known as Hymn 21. The purpose of this article is to show that Symeon's Hymn 21, which is specifically framed in Johannine language and imagery, not only upholds the traditional teaching on the nature of the hypostases in the Trinity found in the writings of the Church Fathers and the decrees of the Councils, especially Nicaea and Constantinople, but also affords us a window into the state of Trinitarian theology in the East in the early eleventh century. Furthermore, this article also points out that Symeon's insistence on direct, unmediated experience of God over and above purely academic theology has wider implications as these two seemingly opposite views remain contentious even among theologians in our own day. | ||

La réponse de Syméon a pris la forme de ce qui est maintenant connu sous le nom d'Hymne 21. Le but de cet article est de montrer que l'hymne 21 de Syméon, qui s'inscrit spécifiquement dans le langage et l'imagerie johanniques, non seulement confirme l'enseignement traditionnel sur la nature des hypostases dans la Trinité, tel que présent dans les écrits des Pères de l'Église et les décrets des Conciles, surtout Nicée et Constantinople, mais nous renseigne aussi sur l'état de la théologie trinitaire en Orient au début du XIe siècle. En outre, cet article montre que l'insistance de Syméon sur l'expérience directe et immédiate de Dieu, au-delà d'une théologie strictement universitaire et rationnelle, a de grandes implications dans un contexte où cette opposition de points de vue prête toujours le flanc à des controverses parmi les théologiens. | ||
