The Enlightenment idea of tolerance is not only and exclusively a philosophical idea, but also a concept in architectural theory that has resulted from a process of desacralization and dechristianization. This will be demonstrated using Protestant state theory, the project of a "city of sciences, " the idea of the pantheon, and the treatment of religious free-church communities during the 18th century. The high point as well as the turning point is the French Revolution, and its architectural concepts show that dechristianization and the formation of plurality may very well be accompanied by intolerance and even violence. | ||
