| 520 | |a This paper is a linguistically-oriented evaluation of Joseph Martos’ 2015 tome entitled Deconstructing Sacramental Theology. My analysis engages critically with Martos’ tracing of the development of sacramental language from the New Testament period to Vatican II, as well as with his proposal for an authentic sacramentality and resolution of the sacramental crisis. My analysis finds Martos’ volume to be a helpful contribution to the study of the development of sacramental terms from Tertullian to Lombard’s Sentences, especially on the basis of his detailed word searches carried out with the aid of electronic databases. However, my assessment also reveals serious flaws in Martos’ treatment of the Greek language, the assumptions he holds uncritically in relation to the New Testament, and also in terms of the larger philosophical commitments which are evident throughout this tome. Throughout his book Martos proposes a novel and, I will argue, problematic ressourcement model in sacramental theology. Unlike post Vatican II writers such as Kilmartin and Irwin, who seek a deeper grounding of sacramental theology in the Scriptural and early patristic sources, Martos proposes a re-definition of the sacraments on the sole basis of the historically and culturally determined religious experience of a community. I wrap up my evaluation of Martos by rejecting his proposed paradigm of authentic sacramentality, and suggesting instead a path to authentic sacramental ressourcement in line with the agenda set forth by Kilmartin and Irwin. | ||

Mon analyse se penche d'un œil critique sur les recherches de Martos sur le développement du langage sacramentel de la période du Nouveau Testament à Vatican II, ainsi que sur sa proposition pour une sacramentalité authentique et la résolution de la crise sacramentelle. Mon analyse trouve que le volume de Martos est une contribution utile à l'étude du développement des termes sacramentels de Tertullien aux Sentences de Lombard, en particulier sur la base de ses recherches détaillées de mots effectuées à l'aide de bases de données électroniques. Cependant, mon évaluation révèle également de sérieuses failles dans le traitement de la langue grecque par Martos, les hypothèses qu'il tient sans critique par rapport au Nouveau Testament, et aussi en termes d'engagements philosophiques plus larges qui sont évidents dans ce livre. Tout au long de son ouvrage, Martos propose un modèle de ressourcement inédit et, à mon avis, problématique en théologie sacramentelle. Contrairement à des écrivains postérieurs à Vatican II comme Kilmartin et Irwin, qui cherchent à approfondir la théologie sacramentelle dans les sources scripturaires et patristiques primitives, Martos propose une redéfinition des sacrements sur la seule base de l'expérience religieuse d'une communauté déterminée historiquement et culturellement. Je termine mon évaluation de Martos en rejetant le paradigme de sacramentalité authentique qu'il propose et en suggérant plutôt une voie vers un authentique ressourcement sacramentel en accord avec l'agenda établi par Kilmartin et Irwin. | ||
