This essay shows that, for all its contributions, the Joint Declaration typifies the failure of the ecumenical establishment to appreciate the richness of Luther's thought and of the Catholic heritageand to consider the ecumenical implications of these insights. We need to examine all the contextually conditioned diversity of Luther's thought. When Luther is invoked in dialogues, we need to present the whole of his thought on the topic under review. Chances are, as the essay demonstrates, we will find Luther saying things in some contacts that echo points characteristic of other traditions, just as, in their diversity, the Catholic and other heritages on occasion endorse themes characteristic of Luther. | ||
