| Summary: | The Christian tradition lacks a robust chrismatic theology. This is regrettable, since a more developed theology of chrism can clarify the relationship between the baptismal and the ministerial priesthood. This essay outlines the historical origins of chrism, articulates a theology of chrism as a "Christ-maker," and develops a more comprehensive chrismatic ecclesiology that can contribute to ecumenical dialogue. The last objective occupies the bulk of this essay. In developing an ecumenically aware chrismatic ecclesiology, it begins with the top-down chrismatic ecclesiology of Daniel Stramara. A case is made for why this represents an incomplete ecclesiology that must be supplemented by a bottom-up initiatory approach. Only when these two approaches are taken together can a more comprehensive chrismatic ecclesiology begin to emerge that highlights the role chrism plays as the linchpin between the baptismal and the ministerial priesthood in the Roman Catholic and Eastern traditions. The development of a robust chrismatic theology roots the ministerial priesthood in the priesthood of all believers in a way that opens up ecumenical dialogue on ministry and koinonia. |
