Securitas was a slogan propagated from the time of Augustus by literature and since the reign of Nero by the imperial coinage. In official and monumental inscriptions, it is found only from the time of Commodus onwards, particularly in a Latin inscription from Damascus’ region which was seen (and not well deciphered) by André de Monceaux, a traveller and agent of Colbert. In epitaphs, securitas was mentioned earlier, since it appeared at the latest under the Flavians, but it was not typical of the whole empire: instead, its use draws attention to the variety of epigraphic habits in space and time. |
