Mais le plus important est d'observer que dans tous les cas de figure, où qu'en soit le pénitent, l'enjeu reste le même : il est de progresser vers le Christ, autrement dit de prendre conscience que l'amour appelle plus loin. Cet article veut indiquer comment la démarche sacramentelle peut contribuer à l'éveil de la conscience, et quel rôle y joue le prêtre, essentiellement par son attitude évangélique et par sa façon de renvoyer à l'Évangile. L'article rappelle surtout que la connaissance de son propre péché est une grâce à demander ; elle relève du mystère de Dieu. On y passe de l'observance de la loi à une mise en route avec le Christ. 
520 |a Penitents come to confession with various interior dispositions, which is to say different ways of relating to themselves, to sin, and to God. This article represents an effort at typology. It is important to observe, however, that the challenge remains the same in all cases, regardless of the particularities of each penitent : the challenge is to advance towards Christ, to recognise the love that calls us to go further. This article seeks to indicate how the experience of the sacrament of reconciliation can contribute to an awakening of conscience on the part of the penitent, a process to which the priest contributes by his evangelical attitude and his way of referring to the Gospel. This article reminds us above all that an awareness of one’s own sin is a grace to be asked for ; it is part of the mystery of God. It is through this process that we pass from mere observance of the law to journeying with Christ.
